The Dato Team

Dato is building the fastest machine learning analytics engine for graph and tabular data sets. Started in 2009 as an open source project by Carlos Guestrin, the software is used daily for millions of recommendations in popular consumer services. Dato is based in Seattle.


Carlos Guestrin, PhD, Co-Founder & CEO, Dato

Carlos is the CEO and co-founder of Dato (formerly GraphLab, Inc.) and the Amazon Professor of Machine Learning in Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. A world-recognized leader in the field of Machine Learning, Carlos was named one of the 2008 “Brilliant 10″ by Popular Science Magazine, received the 2009 IJCAI Computers and Thought Award for his contributions to Artificial Intelligence, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).


Sethu Raman

Sethu is the VP of Engineering. He developed an interest in Machine Learning while creating and leading the Streaming Data Analytics Group at Microsoft . Sethu has held several engineering leadership positions, including Product Unit Manager and Distinguished Engineer, at Microsoft.


Rajat Arya

Rajat is a software engineer with over a decade of commercial industry experience. Most recently he spent three years in the AWS Database Services group focusing on building fault-tolerant high-performance distributed systems. He is a part-time graduate student studying Computer Science at University of Washington, and holds a bachelors degree in Computer Science from University of Pennsylvania.


Eduardo Rosini

Eduardo is the SVP of Business Development and Sales. As an Applied Math graduate student at the University of Washington, he became passionate about Machine Learning and the opportunity to change the world by bringing its transformational power to broader audiences. Eduardo has held several Sales and Marketing leadership roles at Microsoft.


Danny Bickson, PhD

Danny Bickson was a project scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, working on the GraphLab PowerGraph project from its early stages. Danny’s applied research is focused on the intersection of distributed algorithms, machine learning and big data.


Joseph Gonzalez, PhD

Joseph Gonzalez studies distributed systems for machine learning and developed GraphLab PowerGraph as part of his thesis work at Carnegie Mellon University. Joseph joins us from San Francisco where he is a postdoc in the AMPLab at UC Berkeley.


Jay (Haijie) Gu

Jay is finishing his PhD in Machine Learning from Carnegie Mellon University where he studies machine learning on big graphs. He has developed advanced methods to construct, partition and represent graphs.


Yucheng Low, PhD

Yucheng studies parallel and distributed systems for Machine Learning and he developed the GraphLab PowerGraph system as part of his thesis work at Carnegie Mellon University. Yucheng is an expert in low-level system design, communication protocols, and C++ software engineering.


Chris DuBois

Chris DuBois has a PhD in Statistics from University of California, Irvine, where he studied latent variable models for social network data occurring over time.


Tim Muss

Tim has fifteen-years experience defining and delivering compelling product experiences through software, services and devices to consumer, business and IT audiences. His applied user experience, product planning and engineering skillset enables him to effectively contribute across the entire product development cycle from strategic conception and market validation to release and refinement. Tim has a Masters degree in Human Factors and Ergonomics: Product Design from Cornell University


Shawn Scully, PhD

Shawn loves inspired technologies. He has worked with a number of high tech startups developing and bringing new products to market. His background spans recommendation systems, physics simulations, optics, and energy. He holds a PhD in Materials Science from Stanford University and a BA in Physics from Cornell University.


Hoyt Koepke, PhD

Hoyt Koepke recently completed his PhD in Statistics from the University of Washington after completing a Masters in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. He has worked on a wide range of research topics including cluster analysis, feature learning, algorithms, and optimization.


Susan Romero

Susan is a software engineer with experience developing applications in research and enterprise environments. Prior to joining Dato, she created powerful solutions in Infrastructure and Platform as a Service offerings at the IBM SmartCloud Innovation Center and delivered middleware and applications in a customer-facing role for IBM Global Technology Services. She holds a Master’s in Computer Science from NJIT and a Bachelor’s in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from NCSU.


Evan Samanas

Evan’s background is in studying scalable techniques for developing algorithms and tools for supercomputers. He recently finished his M.S. in Computer Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was a contributor to the MRNet project. He also spent time building tools for Los Alamos National Laboratory.


Toby Roseman

Toby studied Computer Science and Math at the University of Washington. After graduating in 2006, he spent five years as a Software Developer at, working on a variety of systems and data analysis projects. After leaving Amazon, he worked on a number of side projects, most notably a recommender system for online content.


Mark Enomoto

Mark loves to design “stuff”. From a traditional Masters degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to a career that started pre-Macintosh, to Ux design at Microsoft working on consumer products, Windows and eventually mobile products. In his spare time woodworking allows him a pixel break and can still count to ten using all of his fingers.


Eric Wolfe

Eric comes to Dato with nearly 20 years experience in interactive design with concentration in UI and UX. He has worked with a vast spectrum of clients during his career but his sweet spot is in the technology industry.


Alice Zheng, PhD

Alice is an expert in Machine Learning algorithms and applications. She loves playing with data and building tools to enable others to play with data. Prior to joining Dato, she was a Machine Learning researcher at Microsoft Research, Redmond. She holds a PhD and a B.A. in Computer Science, and a B.A. in Mathematics, all from U.C. Berkeley.


Brian Kent, PhD

Brian earned a PhD in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University. His research focused on clustering methods and topological data analysis, with applications in neuroimaging and genetics.


Zach Nation

Zach is a software engineer with 6 years of industry experience. He most recently worked at Microsoft in the Office division, working on web-based and client-side UX features, performance improvements, and engineering tools. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Arizona.


Srikrishna Sridhar, PhD

Krishna has a PhD in Computer Science from University of Wisconsin-Madison where he worked on high-performance software for large scale problems in mathematical optimization, and data analysis. His work has been used in applications such as health care, industrial production planning, and machine learning.


Ping Wang

Ping is a software engineer with more than a decade of experience in core server products such as database, streaming, etc. She masters full software stack and also gained knowledge of business, finance, customer relationship by venturing into startup world for two years. She loves nature and her dream is to travel around the world.


Yifei Yao

Prior to joining Dato, Yifei was a Software Development Engineer at where he worked on large-scale merchant listing applications and services. Yifei obtained a Masters degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.


Piotr Teterwak

Piotr recently finished his BA in Computer Science at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, where he conducted work exploring the learning of Convolutional Deep Neural Nets with applications in Computer Vision.


Sylvie Liberman

Sylvie loves helping great teams reach their potential. She has over 10 years experience working in general management, and holds a BA and MBA from Dartmouth College.


Emad Soroush, PhD

Emad has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Washington, Seattle. His research focused on building new databases and distributed systems with applications in domain sciences like astronomy. Emad loves to build new techniques and tools to understand and process large, complex data.


Dick Kreisberg

Dick aspires to inject insight into every data set. As a senior engineer at the Institute for Systems Biology, he worked alongside scientists and bioinformaticians to build interactive visual applications to explore large, complex genomic data sets. His focus is on data visualization, user experience, and collaborative exploratory data analysis. He holds a MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington.


Michael Fire, PhD

Michael holds a PhD from the Information Systems Engineering Department at the Ben-Gurion University. He is an expert in Data Mining and Social Networks Analysis. Michael also has extensive experience as a data scientist working for various companies and organizations.


Roman Schindlauer

Roman has a PhD in AI from the Vienna University of Technology where he worked on knowledge representation and reasoning in the context of Semantic Web technologies. He gathered program management experience at Microsoft, where he contributed to a wide range of projects, including SQL Server, Streaming Analytics, Bing Maps, and Cortana.


Antoine Atallah

Antoine is an engineer with more than a decade of experience building machine learning systems, from the smallest scale to systems running on tens of thousands of machines. His background is in electrical engineering and has worked on both the software and hardware side, optimizing everything down to the transistor. He has worked in different environments from startups to large companies (Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter). He loves to tackle challenges with a positive attitude. In his spare time, he enjoys builing intelligent robots that combine both machine learning and hardware design.


Jennifer Bolton

Jennifer leads Inbound Marketing at Dato. As an IT consultant with PwC, she traveled around the US and internationally for 7 years before settling in Seattle. Since then, Jennifer has held Marketing and Product leadership roles at Smartsheet, F5 Networks, and Allrecipes. Jennifer loves geeking out on new technologies which make people's lives exponentially easier.


Charles Maalouf

Prior to joining Dato, Charlie spend 3 years building machine learning systems in the intersection of the energy and weather sectors. Charlie is also trained as an applied econometrician at Northwestern University where his research was focused on time series analysis of different financial and economic markets.


Shaowei Png

Shaowei holds a Bachelor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore, and an M.Sc. degree from McGill University where he did research in Machine Learning. Prior to Dato, he was a software engineer at Google.


Karla Vega

Karla is the customer success manager at Dato. Prior to Dato, she worked as a research engineer developing tools that enabled scientific discovery through data analysis and visualization. Karla has extensive experience supporting innovative data science projects. She loves to enable and work in projects that change the world! Karla has an M.S and B.S in aerospace engineering from UT Austin and a M.S in mechanical engineering from U.C. Berkeley. She is also a PhD student at the UW and a VA Fellow.


Pablo Serrano

Pablo leads Product Marketing at Dato. Prior to Dato he brought software and hardware consumer products to a variety markets. He became an advocate for machine learning while obtaining his MBA at the University of Washington and transitioned to B2B products. Pablo is excited about building a more intelligent future accelerating the creation of intelligent applications.


Kaiyu Zhao

Kaiyu is finishing his PhD in Data Visualization from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His research was primarily focused on data visualization and visual analytics. He built tools using C++ for data/model representation and integrated R for the modeling process. He also contributed to a C++ project known as XmdvTool which has over 20 years of history.


Bianca Marcial

Bianca earned a B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez campus. She graduated GE’s Information Technology Leadership Program (ITLP) where she worked as a software engineer focusing on front-end development for three years. Now she is thrilled to be part of Dato’s team.


Rebecca Scully

Rebecca's interest in events and marketing grew out of her experience as a professional opera singer. She enjoys leveraging her unique background to reach audiences with innovative communications and inspirational experiences. She has worked with arts organizations, non-profits and startups and is inspired by all things arts and technology.


Alicija Bulota

Alicija’s background is in chemistry and computer science. Her interest in machine learning and business lead her to join the Dato team with the goal of bringing intelligent technologies to the masses.
